Message from the President
It is both a pleasure and an honour for me to write this note to you, the ESB members, as the society’s president. I am profoundly aware of the substantial contributions, the reputations and especially the eloquence of my predecessors. I have been active in the ESB for nearly two decades now, and yet a part of me still feels very much like the wide-eyed and enthusiastic young PhD student who was introduced to the society in Toulouse. I have observed over those years the incredible way in which the research community and the underlying inquisitive nature of science breaks down barriers and bridges generations, through open communication and a shared desire to discover, which is probably why the time flies.

Report on the ESB2016 in Lyon
The 22nd Congress of the European Society of Biomechanics took place from 10th to 13th July 2016 at the Cité des Congrès in Lyon, France. The meeting was organized by the European Society of Biomechanics, the Société de Biomécanique, (an international society which organizes a congress every year gathering delegates mostly from French speaking countries including Belgium, Canada, France and Switzerland), and by the Université de Lyon, IFSTTAR, Mines Saint-Etienne and the Université Grenoble Alpes. This year the congress was an opportunity to celebrate the 40th Anniversaries of both the European Society of Biomechanics and of the Société de Biomécanique.

A summary of the Prizes and Honours Awarded at the ESB Congress in Lyon can be found here.
You may be aware that the ESB, as a society, is a member of the European Alliance of Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES). You, as a member of the ESB, are entitled to receive the benefits provided by EAMBES.
The European Alliance of Medical and Biological Engineering and Science (EAMBES) will organize its next conference 11-15 June 2017, Tampere, Finland.

Please find In this Section, a call for new members to serve on the ESB student committee, the new ESB mobility award winners 2016, and a report from one 2015 mobility award winner.
Our membership is growing year on year. Following the 22nd Congress held in Lyon, the number of applications for membership increased significantly. Total membership is now well over 1000 (1204 members in total).
The membership status was updated for all those ESB members who attended the Congress in Lyon (their membership is therefore automatically paid until the end of 2017). In the next months we will be launching the campaign for the renewal of society membership for everybody else who did not attend the yearly congress (in this case, payment needs to be made through the ESB web portal).
News from the ESB Italian chapter
In the past year, the ESB-ITA supported the organization of three important events – the VI ESB-ITA annual meeting, a session on biomechanics within the GIMC-GMA 2016, and the first ESB-ITA thematic Symposium Frontier Biomechanical Challenges in Cardiovascular Physiopathology.
News from the ESB Spanish Chapter
The Spanish National Chapter held its sixth meeting in Badajoz on 24th October at the Escuela de Ingenierías Industriales (Universidad de Extremadura). The main objectives of the meeting were to put professionals and researchers in the field of biomechanics in contact, to enhance collaborations between universities, hospitals and companies and also to encourage dissemination and promotion of studies in this field throughout Spain.
Please note that any ESB active or student member in good standing and affiliated to an organization located in Austria/Italy/Spain is also a rightful member of the Austrian/Italian/Spanish National Chapter of the ESB. The same applies to corporate members whose legal site is located in Austria/Italy/Spain, and to honorary and senior members who are resident in Austria/Italy/Spain. ESB members of Austrian/Italian/Spanish nationality, but working or resident in other countries, can also join the Chapter by sending a request to the President of the Chapter.
