22nd Congress of the European Society of Biomechanics

ESB 2016 will take place at the Cité des Congrès of Lyon, France, from the 10th to 13th of July 2016 and is jointly organized by the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB) and the Société de Biomécanique (SB).

Two anniversaries will be celebrated at the occasion of ESB 2016. The ESB is a European society founded in 1976 and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2016. The SB is an international society which organizes a congress every year gathering delegates mostly from French speaking countries (Belgium, Canada, France, Switzerland…). The first conference was organized in Lyon in 1976. So the SB will celebrate the 40th anniversary of its annual conference in 2016.

The congress will take place in Lyon which is a very attractive city. Among numerous examples, Lyon is the place where Auguste and Louis Lumière invented the “Cinématographe” in 1895. Cité des Congrès is a modern and recently built venue offering the latest state-of–the-art equipment.

7th World Congress on Biomechanics

7th World Congress of Biomechanics7th World Congress on Biomechanics
July 6 – 11, 2014, Boston, USA

The World Congress of Biomechanics is an international meeting held once every four years, rotating among Europe, Asia and the Americas.  This, the 7th WCB, will once again bring together engineers, scientists from various disciplines including biology, physics, mathematics, computer science, chemistry and various clinical specialties. Applications range from basic biology to medical devices to the latest technologies.  Researchers, engineers from industry, medical doctors, academics, and students are all welcome.  Vendor exhibitions will highlight the latest technologies, publications, and medical devices.

The ESB strongly supports the WCB, by its representation on the organising committee, and the ESB community is strongly integrated, with European scientists participating as keynote lecturers,  track and session chairs for the conference. The WCB aims to offer nearly 400 individual scientific sessions, therefore the congress provides a unique opportunity to experience the full breadth and depth of global biomechanics research. Traditional ESB activities will be given a specific focus at the congress, with plenary sessions dedicated to our awards program and our bi-annual General Assembly. Boston is convenient to reach from all major European airports and offers a unique venue for the WCB. We hope to see a strong support from the European biomechanics community and look forward to a stimulating 5 days of in-depth discussions and presentations.

For more information consult the congress website (http://www.wcb2014.com) contact eileen@wcb2014.com or andrea@wcb2014.com.

WCB REGISTRATION: When you register for WCB remember to state that you are a member of the European Society of Biomechanics. Select European Society of Biomechanics from the dropdown menu on the section of the form that asks ‘Primary Professional Society Affiliation’.  WCB only has one registration fee for all participants, regardless of any membership. For that reason, ESB is not able to offer any discount on the registration fee. The good news is that for ESB members who participate to the congress and who are in good standing (i.e. they have already paid their membership for 2014, either by having participated to ESB2013 in Patras, or by paying the membership fee by the end of this year), the membership fee up to the end of 2015 will be included in the congress registration fee.

CISM course – Skeletal Tissue Engineering Mechanics

SEPTEMBER 2013 – KMM-VIN – Skeletal Tissue Engineering Mechanics, with Links to Biology, Chemistry and Medicine

September 23, 2013 — September 27, 2013

Coordinators:

  • Christian Hellmich (Vienna University of Technology, Austria)
  • Aldo R. Boccaccini (University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany)

Tissue engineering is the use of cells and bio-chemical substances, in combination with engineering and materials methods, in order to restore, maintain, or improve the functioning of biological tissue. The material scientific and cell biological technologies used in contemporary tissue engineering have reached breathtaking sophistication. On the contrary, the current design process of tissue engineering (TE) scaffolds is still a pure trial and error approach. We propose that this conceptual weakness explains why reliable, safe TE solutions for the daily clinical use are the exception, rather than the rule. In fact, it is very complicated (if not impossible), even with tremendous input gained from sophisticated experimental work, to guess suitable combinations of the key design parameters (chemical composition, porosity, microstructural geometry, distribution of signalling factors and biological cells), which reflect a highly complex system of mutually coupled phenomena.
This is where the field of applied mechanics is expected to be of enormous help – and recent developments in latest years are planned to be disseminated to an interdisciplinary audience from civil and mechanical engineering, material science, biology, and biomedicine. In more detail, the lectures of the proposed course will cover topics concerning the key challenges of contemporary tissue engineering strategies, which result from (at least) two competing requirements: (i) the tissue engineering scaffolds must exhibit a sufficient mechanical competence, i.e. stiffness and strength comparable to natural bone. This relates to structural soundness; and (ii) within the living organism, it should be continuously resorbed and replaced by natural bone. This relates to the topic of bioresorbable scaffolds enabling internal growth of new tissue.
Thereby, bone tissue will be the key focus, since in this field, great progress has been made, not only in the fields of materials science and biology, but in particular in the field of applied and computational mechanics.
The course will gather experts from the fields of applied mechanics, biology, and chemistry, in order to give, in an unprecedented transdisciplinary fashion (normally, applied mechanicians are rather missing in the topic, than coordinating a joint educational effort), the cutting-edge view on what the up-to-date ingredients of tissue engineering for load-carrying organs are.
The course is addressed to all doctoral students, researchers, engineers, physicists, chemists, biologists, and medical doctors interested in a novel, comprehensive approach to the understanding and improvement of the tissue engineering field, with special emphasis on mechanics of tissue engineering scaffolds and on the effect of mechanics on biological systems.
