Call for Perspective Talk – 2024 – Update
Although it seems still far, time flies fast and to allow you to properly apply for Perspective Talks at ESB 2024 we have refined the definition to improve clarity on this topic:
“A Perspectives Talk (PT) is a ‘mini-keynote’, i.e., an extended presentation that introduces a session. PT is given by an established researcher or tandem of experts from different fields/backgrounds with focus on a cutting edge, coherent body of research. It should give a brief overview of results and unanswered questions, based mainly, but not exclusively on their own and their group’s contribution to this field, and must include future vision and challenges to be targeted. PTs are intended to encourage intergenerational and multidisciplinary networking and to give scientists the opportunity to learn from those with more experience.”
Another dedicated invitation including the PT abstract template will follow soon, stay tuned!

Outline of Journal Club
We are planning an autumn edition of our online ESB-Journal Club and are soliciting expressions of interest. Did you have a paper accepted in 2023 as first author and are you willing to present it online?
Please read further here.
We are soliciting contributions to the Research Topic ‘Highlights from the ESB2023 conference’ in Frontiers Bioengineering and Biotechnology. Did you present @ESB2023 and are you interested in publishing your work as a full paper?
Please read further here.
We are finalizing the expressions of interest for the ESB working groups, to be initiated in the coming year. Are you interested in leading or contributing to a specific working group and have you not communicated this through the ESB survey?
Please read further here.
Did you defend your PhD the past year and are you interested to share your PhD work with the ESB community?
Please read further here.
Ilse Jonkers, Chair of the Scientific Communications Committee

Diversity, Inclusivity and Membership News
Change in Membership Application Reviewing Process
From October 2023, membership applications will not be reviewed on a monthly basis anymore. Instead, they will be reviewed at regular interval, at times related to the yearly timeline of the society (i.e. in time to be eligible for awards, for members’ reduced fee at the congress, …). See details on the membership section of the website!

ESB – Open Positions for Committees – We need you!!!
Call for expression of interest from volunteers to participate in science communication committee
To support our initiatives, there is a call for volunteers (from postdoc onwards) willing to volunteer in organizing future science communication events, including those from the working groups. This committee will meet regularly and support the activities of the ESB science communication responsible in close collaboration with the ESB council.
Interested in science communication and fond of biomechanics? – Participate!
Please feel free to contact me by email (science@esbiomech.org), sending your short CV and motivational statement.
Join the Diversity, Inclusion and Membership committee
There is a call to members willing to volunteer to support initiatives on diversity and inclusion for the society. We would like to create a Diversity, Inclusion and Membership committee, working closely with the ESB council, which first tasks will be to define terms of reference and develop a diversity and inclusion action plan for the society.
Interested in diversity and inclusion at the ESB? – Participate by completing the short form at
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfeMozLL1AiNatT_oo6LecJHuP5z_YKYvu1MW1Gavo-rWzEOQ/viewform
Mentoring programme
Since April 2023, the ESB has launched a mentoring programme. It provides any member of the society with the possibility to be paired with another member who is willing to act as mentor. If you want to participate as a mentor or a mentee, please sign-in to your member profile and update your information regarding mentoring!
It is recognised that mentoring does not cater well for peer-support at a more senior level. If you would be keen to be involved in a peer support group, please contact the Diversity, Inclusion and Membership committee chair at membership.chair@esbiomech.org
