Message from the President

It’s autumn already.  I personally am always rather shocked at how quickly the summer goes by, only to be followed by an absolutely manic period in September and early October as we resume our business as usual.  Most of us either try to get ourselves mentally and physically prepared for the next academic semester, with the challenge and promise of many new students, or get swept up in the increased tempo in the industrial sector as the summer downtime gives way to the relentless rush towards the end of the (fiscal) year.  Despite the haste, we can still take a moment to look back, and for me that means briefly revisiting the ESB annual meeting in Sevilla.

Treasurer’s report

The total assets of the Society are just below 150 000 Euro, while the incomes for 2016 were little less than 30 000 Euro.  The financial report for 2016 (negative balance of -6133 Euro) was approved by the Financial Auditors in June 2017, and later at the General Assembly during the Congress in Seville. Similarly, the projections for 2017 (expected positive balance around +4000 Euro) were presented and approved during the General Assembly.  The Treasurer wishes to thank the Auditors Monique Donkerwolcke and Ulrich Simon, for their careful revision and their advices.

While the total number of members has increased over time, in the last few years the fraction of members in arrears has steadily decreased.  Currently, more than 72% of the members are in good standing, partly because of the paid-by-congress mechanism, and partly because they paid their dues through autonomously (thank you!) .

Membership status has just been updated for all those ESB members who attended the Congress in Seville, and for those who applied for new membership right after the Congress (their membership is therefore automatically paid until the end of 2018).  In the next months we will be launching the campaign for the renewal of society membership for everybody else who did not attend the yearly congress (in this case, payment needs to be made through the ESB web portal).
