10th World Congress of Biomechanics 2026 in Vancouver

Two Fully Funded PhD Positions in TMJ Biomechanics / AI – Medical University of Vienna (Austria)

We are recruiting two PhD candidates for an FWF-funded project on the biomechanics of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The goal is to build jaw digital twins, combining morphology, muscle coordination and joint loading, to advance understanding of TMD and its higher prevalence in women. Work is at the interface of AI and mechanics-based simulation in a highly interdisciplinary setting.

Tracks
• PhD 1: ML-enhanced, reduced-coordinate hybrid FE / rigid-body modelling linking TMJ morphology to mechanical stress.
• PhD 2: Reinforcement-learning driven muscle coordination & motor control in jaw function.

Requirements
• MSc (or equivalent) in biomedical/mechanical engineering, computer science, physics, or related discipline
• Strong programming (e.g., Python; PyTorch/TensorFlow; Java)
• Interest in AI + simulation for human biomechanics
• Experience in FE modelling, rigid-body simulation, RL, or medical imaging/biomech data is a plus

We offer
• Fully funded 3–4 year PhD positions at Medical University of Vienna
• Integration with the Competence Center AI in Dentistry and the Comprehensive Center for AI in Medicine
• Outstanding research environment and quality of life in Vienna
