Meetings and external affairs Committee: Michele Marino

Michele Marino

University of Rome Tor Vergata

Italy

Michele Marino is Associate Professor of Mechanics of Materials and Structures at the University of Rome Tor Vergata (Italy). He received his MSc in Medical Engineering (2008) and PhD in Structural Mechanics (2013) from the same university. His career has been rooted in computational methods and biomechanics, with early international experience as a visiting researcher at the University of Leeds (UK) and, subsequently, as an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at Leibniz University Hannover (Germany). There, he later served as Group Leader for Predictive Simulation in Biomechanics, advancing computational approaches for biological systems and tissue engineering.

His research focuses mainly on cardiovascular biomechanics, integrating constitutive modelling, computational methods, multiscale approaches, and chemo-mechano-biological processes. He has co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles, including a contribution to the Encyclopedia of Biomedical Engineering. His work has been recognised with the AIMETA Junior Prize (2019).

His research has been funded by the EU, Germany and Italy. In particular, he was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (2015), a Rita Levi Montalcini tenure-track professorship (2020), and an ERC Consolidator Grant (2025).

Michele has been an ESB active member since 2014, regularly contributing to its congresses as a presenter, keynote speaker, session chair and organiser of scientific activities. His long-standing commitment to the ESB includes serving as President of the Italian Chapter of the ESB (2015–2021). In parallel, he served as Secretary of the Biomechanics Group of AIMETA (2018–2024), contributing to the promotion of biomechanics within the Italian mechanics community.
