Italian Chapter
News from ESB-ITA
The XII Annual Meeting of the Italian Chapter of the European Society of Biomechanics (ESB-ITA), organized by Politecnico di Torino, took place in Turin (Italy) on 18-19 September 2023. The large number of received abstracts (105) and attendees (146) made it a vibrant and enriching opportunity for all the Italian ESB community. With 6 keynote speakers of which 3 international (and 2 of them shared in streaming and freely available), the congress provided an in-depth overview of the current Biomechanics research, from molecular to organ level. The Congress was also an opportunity for ESB-ITA to tighten the collaboration with the associations ERC in Italy and GBMA AIMETA. During the congress, the ESB-ITA Master Thesis Award 2023 was awarded and 12 awards were presented. The congress was supported by 14 sponsors, by the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of Politecnico di Torino, and by the ESB Council.
Moreover, during the congress, the new ESB-ITA Executive Board for the years 2023-25 was elected, and it is composed by: Alessio Gizzi, Giulia Luraghi, and Diana Massai.

The Italian Chapter of ESB just launched a novel initiative to involve more and more young scientists in the organisation’s activities. Three working groups (WG) have been proposed:
WG Communication, Manager: Giulia Luraghi
Purpose: The Communication WG will take care of all dissemination and communication actions internally and externally, such as: membership promotion (new members and renewals), communication/promotion of the chapter’s activities, communication/promotion of the activities of the other WGs, organisation of online seminars for members only, management of channels (X, website, Linkedin, Newsletter).
WG Mentoring, Manager: Diana Massai
Purpose: The Mentoring WG will have as its objective the creation of opportunities for interaction and comparison between senior and junior researchers, in order to create an orientation/support network that promotes the professional growth of Italian researchers affiliated to ESB- ITA. The planned actions will concern: meeting initiatives (in person or virtual) for mentoring actions between national members; invitations to senior researchers to share their experience and professional path; organisation of events/workshops/meetings with winners, reviewers and/or financiers of funded projects (e.g. Marie Curie, ERC, etc.) dedicated to illustrating the calls for proposals and promoting the writing of proposals; etc.
WG Networking, Manager: Alessio Gizzi
Purpose: The Networking WG will have as its objective the strengthening and development of shared actions with other scientific societies, such as: the definition of a network of contacts with other national ESB chapters, mutual participation in conferences, the definition of invitations aimed at multidisciplinarity and mutual exchange, the establishment of dedicated prizes, the organisation of joint schools/seminars/information events, etc.
