Swirling strength in the abdominal aortic aneurism

Swirling strength in the abdominal aortic aneurism by Valentina Mazzi

Swirling strength in the abdominal aortic aneurism by Valentina Mazzi, Politecnico di Torino.
The Figure shows volumetric maps of swirling strength in a patient-specific computational hemodynamics model of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) at different time steps along the cardiac cycle. The swirling strength is a scalar measure of the local swirling rate inside the vortex, and it can be quantified by the absolute value of the imaginary part of the complex eigenvalue of velocity gradient tensor. The analysis of the vortex structures transported in AAA in terms of swirling strength offers a different perspective to decipher AAA flow complexity and might contribute to a deeper understanding of the hemodynamics-driven processes underlying AAA progression.
