Dear Subscriber,
Looking forward to meeting up with ESB members attending the WCB 2018 in Dublin less than two days.
First, a message from the WCB 2018 organisers.
Chris Jacobs 1964 – 2018
It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of our friend and colleague Christopher Jacobs on July 1st after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife and daughter. Dr. Jacobs was recognized for his seminal research in bone cellular mechanotransduction and computational biomechanics, specifically for demonstrating the importance of load-induced interstitial fluid flow and the role of primary cilia in signal transduction mechanisms in bone and stem cells. Chris joined the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University in 2008 after already establishing himself as a leader in biomechanics and mechanobiology while faculty at both Stanford University and Pennsylvania State University.
In addition to his expertise as a researcher, Chris was a wonderful teacher, mentor, colleague, and friend. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this difficult time. Donations to support Chris’s family are accepted at https://www.gofundme.com/chris-jacobs-memorial-fund.
To celebrate his life and share our many fond memories, we are organising a gathering on Monday night directly after the welcome reception of the World Congress of Biomechanics, details below. Any queries can be directed to David Hoey (dahoey@tcd.ie)
Date and Time: Monday July 9th at 8pm
Location: Ruin Bar Dublin, 33 Tara Street, Dublin 2 https://goo.gl/maps/Y347VcYjysL2
Chris was a long standing member of ESB; amoung his many contributions he won the ESB Research Award in Toulouse in 1998 and was a keynote speaker in Lyon in 2016. He was a great friend and mentor to many ESB council members and his participation in the ESB family will be sorely missed.
