Experience and enjoy the beauty of Maastricht!
A cultural and culinary city in the center of Europe
Maastricht is one of the oldest cities in the South of the Netherlands, as you will quickly discover when strolling through the historic inner city and along the Meuse river. Churches, city walls, monumental merchant houses and big squares merge seamlessly. The old city was founded by the Roman occupants 100 BC, a period of which ruins can still be found (and visited) across the city.
Maastricht truly is a very compact city, with all highlights within walking distance. Maastricht is the perfect city for those who love fashion, art, design and gastronomy. A great variety of excellent restaurants and bars make it a very lively city, surrounded by beautiful nature, lovely hills, the iconic caves, and castles. The latter can be visited for exploration, to enjoy the beautiful drawings, or for mountain biking. Several prize winning wineries are found in the beautiful country side.
Its inhabitants form an international community and are known for their multicultural influences and multilingualism speaking typically Dutch, German, French and English. The locals are friendly, open, embracing the ’joie the vivre’. Considering this, and the central location of Maastricht in Europe, it’s not surprising that the Treaty on European Union was signed here in 1992, therefore known as the Maastricht Treaty.
Maastricht is situated between the three organizing universities, Eindhoven University of Technology, KU Leuven, and Université de Liège. The city surely has a ‘scientific vibe’, housing a university, a university medical center, as well as the Brightland, Health & Chemelot campuses. In fact, 10% of Maastricht’s population consists of students.
