From the President: Biomechanics in the Era of Personalised Health

In two months we will come together again for our annual meeting, incorporated into the World Congress of Biomechanics in Dublin. I am very much looking forward to this, especially as it gives us the opportunity to again give a European flavour to the WCB. It is also nearly two decades since the ESB held its meeting in Dublin, an event that for me coincided with my transition from doctoral candidate to “fully qualified” researcher, however one chooses to interpret that, with the opportunities and responsibilities to lead rather than follow.

Student’s corner

As every year, the Student Committee calls for ESB Mobility Award applications, and the deadline for the 2018 edition is May 31st (https://esbiomech.org/call-for-mobility-awards-is-open-deadline-may-31st-2018/). The award consists in a cost-of-living allowance of 4.000 € that gives ESB students and early researchers (up to one year after the PhD defense) the opportunity to spend from two to six months abroad under the supervision of an ESB member research. It is a unique opportunity, don’t miss it!

Last year, Karen Mys, from KU Leuven used the Mobility Award to spend 4 months at the AO Research Institute (AO Foundation) in Davos and she has kindly agreed to share some words about her experience.

Treasurer’s news

The previous year 2017 has been very positive for the finances of the ESB, with a balance of nearly +47 000 Euro (this exceptionally high positive balance is partly due to amounts from 2016 being cashed in 2017).  The 2017 Financial Report has already been approved by the Financial Auditors, Monique Donkerwolcke and Paulo Fernandes.  The Treasurer and the ESB are extremely grateful for the careful and detailed revision they have carried out.  Projections for 2018 are for a stable financial situation this year.
